Often confused with sciatica, SIJ pain doesn’t usually travel lower than the knee. True sciatic pain symptoms commonly radiate below the knee all the way to the foot. Another distinguishing feature of SIJ pain is that the pain is more noticeable or tender on one side over the region of the posterior superior iliac spine (PSIS), the large bumps or dimples on either side of the lower back. This one-sided low back pain almost always presents on the same side as the "pseudo sciatica." If the muscles around this area are tight and sore, it’s an indication that the SIJ is not functioning correctly.
